Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental
I have always been inspired by the beauty of difference in all of us and the construct of The Enneagram puts words to the differences. The Enneagram has helped me relate, grow, see blind spots, and love more deeply. We truly are unique hues on a spectrum of humanity and I admire the variety. The function of yellow isn't the same as red, but we need them both the same. My hope is that as you view these portraits, you will see the strengths that we all carry—and when misunderstandings arise, we can all begin to see through the lens of our brothers and sisters.
Enneagram 4’s are the people in our lives that know the importance of deeply feeling things and appreciating the beauty that they contribute to their world. These are the people that will remind you to stop and take a look at the beautiful things. They see significance in the small and often feel that they carry a lot of significance themselves.
Each Enneagram type brings such a unique view of the world and how they are contributors themselves. I have a few Enneagram 4’s in my life and I know I can always count on them to be inspiring, creative and a safe place that is accepting of any emotional state i’m in. Some of my nearest and dearest are Enneagram 4’s and I am so thankful I have the pleasure to know beautiful hearts that feels so deep.
“Fours are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. They are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, but can also be moody and self-conscious. Withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also feel disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. At their best they are inspired and highly creative, they are able to renew themselves and transform their experiences.” - The Enneagram Institute
Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. The color purple is often associated with creativity, emotion, mystery, independence and romance.
Josh is an Enneagram Type 4. He is a creative and intuitive artist that uses his ability to emote as a strength. He uses his gifts and personality to help him create long lasting art that encourages everyone around him.
The Basic Fear of the Enneagram 4 is that they have no significance or personal identity
The Basic Desire is to find themselves and their significance
The Enneagram Institute has named this type The Individualist because Fours maintain their identity by seeing themselves as fundamentally different from others. Fours feel that they are unlike other human beings, and consequently, that no one can understand them or love them adequately. They often see themselves as uniquely talented, possessing special, one-of-a-kind gifts, but also as uniquely disadvantaged or flawed. More than any other type, Fours are acutely aware of and focused on their personal differences and deficiencies.
A couple years ago, I had a friend who would constantly (as a joke) tell me to remind him of how unique he was. I jokingly obliged and would on occasion remind him that he was so unique and a real one-of-a kind person. Years later, come to find out, he is in-fact an Enneagram Type 4. All jokes aside there was some validity behind that request. The type 4’s in our life sometimes need to hear that they bring a fresh unique approach to a situation or a unique quality to a group, and that’s okay. The truth is that every single person brings something different to the table, and that’s what makes us better together.
Musician and Songwriter, Sleeping at Last, recently released an Enneagram series depicting each type in song. This project inspired me to create this photo series. I find it so beautiful when we use art to express the individuality of humanity.
One lyric that stuck with me from the song “Four” is written below:
What if we already are
who we’ve been dying to become.
In certain light i can plainly see,
a reflection of magnificence
hidden in you,
maybe even in me
At their best the Enneagram 4 is fully self aware that the significance they strive to achieve is already on the inside of them and in others.
